Bringing school values to life through illustration and storytelling

Overview

Unity Grammar sought a meaningful way to communicate its core values across the school community. Rather than presenting them only as written statements, the goal was to translate these principles into something visual, memorable and engaging for students, staff and families.

Odyssey Creative was commissioned to design a series of illustrated values cards that would capture the spirit of these principles and help embed them into everyday school life.

Unity Grammar sought a meaningful way to communicate its core values across the school community. Rather than presenting them only as written statements, the goal was to translate these principles into something visual, memorable and engaging for students, staff and families.

Our Approach

We approached the project as a storytelling exercise.

Each value was carefully interpreted and translated into a visual narrative through custom illustration. The aim was to create scenes that students could recognise, relate to and learn from.

The illustrations draw on metaphor, symbolism and everyday student experiences to represent ideas such as mastery, relentless learning, global citizenship, prophetic character and entrepreneurial spirit.

Supporting copy was also developed to accompany each card, helping explain the meaning of the illustration and how it connects to the intention behind each value.

Colour, composition and character design were carefully considered to ensure each card felt vibrant and engaging while remaining consistent as a unified set.

Values Explained

Mastery (Ihsan)

Mastery reflects the pursuit of excellence in both learning and character. It is about dedication, patience and the commitment to continually refine one’s skills and understanding. The illustration portrays students working together to complete a robotics project, symbolising perseverance, collaboration and the pursuit of knowledge that benefits others.

Relentless Learning

Relentless learning encourages curiosity and the courage to explore new ideas. Like a rollercoaster journey, learning comes with highs, challenges and moments of discovery. The illustration reflects the excitement and unpredictability of the learning journey while emphasising growth through experience.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

Entrepreneurial spirit celebrates courage, initiative and resilience. It is about embracing challenges and seeing failure as part of progress. The illustration captures the determination to climb higher, symbolising the bravery required to try something new and inspire others to do the same.

Global Citizenship

Global citizenship reminds students of their responsibility as stewards of the Earth. Rooted in the concept of Khilafa, it encourages kindness, sustainability and a sense of shared responsibility for the world around us. The illustration depicts friends supporting one another beneath a shared shelter, symbolising collective care and cooperation.

Prophetic Character

Prophetic character reflects the noble qualities exemplified by the Prophet ﷺ such as humility, compassion and integrity. The illustration draws on the imagery of a guiding light, representing how these virtues illuminate the path for individuals and communities in a changing world.

The Outcome

The final series of values cards provides Unity Grammar with a visual language that reinforces its educational philosophy.

Displayed across classrooms, learning materials and school environments, the cards help bring the school’s principles into daily conversation. Students are able to see, understand and reflect on these values in a way that feels tangible and relevant.

Through illustration and thoughtful design, the project transforms values from simple statements into living ideas that shape the culture of the school community.
